Filing your taxes on time is extremely important if you want to avoid interest and penalties which
could cost you a lot of money.
Below are the important deadlines you should know about.
Individuals
The tax season for individuals runs from July to November if you are a non-provisional taxpayer.
Provisional taxpayers have until the end of January to file their tax returns.
Filing (IRP6) and payment by individuals of provisional tax is as follows:
First period – 31 August
Second period – 28 February
Third period – 30 September

Employers (PAYE)
EMP201’s must be submitted monthly by the 7th of the following month or the day before
that day if the 7th falls on a weekend or public holiday.
Interim EMP501 reconciliations for the period 1 March to 31 August must be filed and paid
between 1 September and 31 October.
Annual EMP501 reconciliations for the period 1 March to 28 February must be filed and paid
between 1 April and 31 May.
Companies
The tax season for companies, which includes Close Corporations, Co-operatives, and Body
Corporates is within 12 months from the date on which their financial year ends. The company
needs to submit a Return of Income (IT14) within this specified time.
Companies are automatically required to declare provisional taxes and the filing (IRP6) and payment
by companies are as follows:
First period – 6 months after prior year end
Second period – at financial year end
Third period – 6 months after the financial year end
Example:
If your financial year end is 30 April 2018 your provisional taxes will have to be declared as follows:
First period – 6 months after the prior year end which will be 31 October 2017
Second period – at financial year end which will be 30 April 2018
Third period – 6 months after the financial year end which will be 31 October 2018
VAT Vendors
There are different VAT cycles and each vendor should declare according to their cycle. The
submission and payment of the VAT201 must be done by the last business day of the month
following the VAT cycle, however, it is advised to file your return before the 25th of the month
following the VAT cycle.
Note that if the day identified is on a weekend or public holiday, the applicable date to fulfill your obligation is the last business day prior to that date.
